Thank you to every single person on this thread who served in the military or any other uniformed service. My family appreciates it and my friends appreciate it and I appreciate it. God bless you all and have a Merry Christmas!

Wow, first one planning to enlist.

Would be gone already if not for a change in policy with the army which put me overweight. Working on dropping it so I can head to basic in the first quarter.

Looking at the US army, 25S: Satellite Communications Operator/Maintainer.

Congratulations, Omar! Sounds like an interesting career field that could also work well for you in the civilian world at some point.

My middle daughter is at her first duty station as a Navy Master of Arms - she's following in her Dad's footsteps by going into military law enforcement, although in a different branch (I was AF - stationed at the Academy, as a matter of fact)!

I have a friend who was Security Forces at the academy a few years ago. Compared it to working security for any college, except he was armed better.

Originally I wanted to go AF, but with my size and their pretty strict restrictions now (which you can attribute to 9000+ on the waiting list, so said the recruiter) it was going to be all but impossible. Issues with me having a kid as well. But, the Army offered me a pretty good set up, and yes, hopefully it will be of use when/if I get out. Getting close to turning 28, so spending 20-25 years to retire doesnt seem like all that bad of an idea, compared to this economy.

Gotta see how well it works with me though. I have always had an interest in the military, from Ancient to Modern, so figured I might as well see if I measure up.

Yep, your friend is right! That's pretty much how I described it, too! :D

Probably the only difference is that back in the 80s we were a mobility unit and spent a lot of time out on excersizes at Ft. Carson. We got a lot of extra "grunt" training back then - other than that, though, it was pretty skate college cop work!

US Army at Ft.Bragg or deployment, but mostly on deployment from Jan 2004-March 2008. Originally signed up for four years active, but had to extend a few months so I could meet the retention requirements for Air Assault school.

I need another option added. I am former RAF (19 years), now retired and joined the Canadian Forces!

Am I just strange?

Second person planning to enlist. Got an application running with the RAF to be a pilot, which is hard to achieve, and another with the army to become a Forward Reconnaissance Troop Commander (in either Life Guards or Queen's Royal Lancers).

And if I fail at both of those, then it's off to the TA!

Former US Navy, stationed in Atsugi, Japan. Did runs on the USS Independance and Kitty Hawk. Current Army, 19D Cavalry Scout. Deployed to Iraq as we speak. Last deployment I was on a Pathfinder team, a light infantry company doing the hooah hooah stuff in afghanistan, now I ride a desk in the troop S2 shop due to bad knees. I'm in the 4-10 Cav out of Fort Carson, Shawn's old stomping grounds.
