I'm looking for a set of rules that fit in for fire team basing, similar to the way Flames of War is based, but for micro scale figures. I hope to run 1-1 level battles without some of the skirmish details of some systems but keep the flavor. Any thoughts on how well FoF will work for this is greatly appreciated. I'm also starting out with a Kuwait vs Iraq set of forces and need to know if the base rule book can handle this or if I will need to invest in one of the other modules as I start out. Thanks for your thoughts.

Tom

FOF is the core rule book from which all others were birthed so you should be able to handle any modern game with ease.

There are several ways to play using micro armour
1 single based.....Nope not what you want

Fire team based (GHQ figures)
US Platoon
HQs Leader, RTO, rifleman,FO/MFO/Jtac and medic
3 squads each 2 stands 1st stand 5 figures 1 gren w M203, AR w M249 and 3 riflemen w M4
2nd stand 4 figures 2 riflemen w M4 , 1 Gren w M203 and 1 AR w M249
platoon weapons squad 3 stands
1st stand MG team with crew and prone guy with binos
2nd stand as above
3rd stand 1 leader fig and RTO
2 optional stands would be the Dragons and crew to represent the javelins replacing the mg stands as the situatin dictated.
The next is the abstracted stand method (GHQ fig)
US stryker Platoon
PL HQs 1 leader 1 RTO
3 squads 1 stand 3 fig riflemen
2 stands each for the weapons squad each w tripod med MG and crew M60 again using the dragons as needed
4 stryker ICVs
Optional stands
FO/JTAC stand w prone fig w bino and RTO for dismount w Stryker FSO vehicle
Company level stand 1st SGT and medic 2 fig this stands forms company casulty collection point.
and controls the companies Medical evacuation vehicle.
Counter intel team 1 rifleman ,1 RTO, 1 sub saharan irregular as interp IN UAH
2 Stryker Mortar carriers w 120mm 2 dismount stands with 81mm and crew from Mod US HW pack.
3 Stryker MGS w 105mm
Company command stand 1 leader 2 RTO 1 stryker command vehicle / UAH when not mounted in Stryker
1 Stryker ICV and XO stand as above but no UAH.
Each company would be supported by the Brigades MI , signal , and fires BN (towed 155mm M198/being replaced with M777 155mm). Engineer support would come from the brigade Engineer Company from either its Combat mobility platoon (stryker ESVs ) or Mobility support Platoons (deuce lt armoured dozzer)
well that should get you started i await your questions.....Mikey

Wow, Mikey, thanks! Even to the poses used.

My old Army buddy (I introduced him to minis while we were in Korea together in '76, nothing else to do there at the time  ) built a Kuwaiti armor battalion at 1 to 1 in 1990, and dug it out recently, challenging me to find a set of rules. So far, several sets have pretty much failed because of too much detail or too high level of play. I messed up a few times and didn't get to play FoF when it was used at a couple of regional game conventions, and now I'm trying to sort it out without spending a fortune on rule books that we wont use. I've worked up a couple of companies of Iraqi troops from the GHQ models, added some appropriate troops for Kuwaiti infantry (my friend only concentrated on tanks and APCs at the time) and hope we can get something going by mid summer, between learning the rules and painting the troops. With what I am seeing, and the PDF option, I am looking at getting into FoF on payday. If I need one of the other Gulf War modules for the Battle of the Bridges (Kuwait vs Iraq, August 1990), let me know and I'll plan to get that as well. One thing I did get was the army lists covering this period from another rules author, and they break out the fire team just about exactly the way you do, so looks like we can make it work. Any suggestions on base sizes for these things? Thanks again for all your help.

Tom

you can use small flames of war bases or the litko wooden small FOW bases (which are easier to pick up and thus easier on the models...Im not happy with the BF FOW bases ive tried them as desighned to hard to pick up and tried them upside down easier to P/u but looked weird...Im thinking of trying MDF or thick card.....if you want to cut down on the number of markers on the board just use unit cards with hit boxes .....any other questions im here man ......Mikey

Thanks! I do most of my basing with Litko, so will look into some of those. Most of my 6mm (which is about 90% of my collection) are on 10x20mm or 15x20mm bases, depending on any prone figures like LMGs. Using a bit larger base will do well.

Another question - what is the largest unit you would consider for a FoF game? I have company level units (able to run either armor or infantry heavy units). With micro armor and using the same size area a little differenty, I thought this might work but expect it to slow things down a bit. Thanks for your help.

Tom reducing the platoons to stands that average between 5 and nine stands ...Bn level games should be doable I think that unit cards would be even more importatnt to keep track of casualties and other stats . For especialy ;arge games I count stands as squads but treat them as Fire teams...IN other words a US squad stand would recive as base FP 5 +2 for LSW and 5 for base defense die but just bump everything up in other words a stand (squad ) goes on overwatch. all weapons stands get the weapons team bonus . Lt mortars range is 7 inches (centimeters ) and beyond med Mort range is 9 inches (centimeters ) and beyond (Watch your danger close rules they still apply) etc . so large scale games are not that hard at all.....Mikey

Thanks! I always end up running convention games so being able to run a game that size will be great. After I asked the question, I looked through some of the scenarios in the downloads and the last of them looks about the same size of unit that I'm hoping to work with, at least once we have the basics sorted out. Looking forward to picking up the rules on payday.
