Couple of pics of two of the games for Ambush Alley Ireland Day that we tested last night...
Action in the Panshir - Soviets versus Mujehedin
Ambush in the Sarobi District, August 2008 - French versus Taliban
We played out the French game last night and it was a very close run affair... Everyone seemed to really enjoy it.
Will try and get a AAR done, but I dont want to give too much away!

August 2008, monday, a french reconnaissance patrol is to suffer the heaviest casualties since 1983 from a Taliban ambush, 50km from Kabul. Reported to have been attacked by a 100 insurgents, the french platoon fought for 2 days with 10 casualties and 21 wounded.
This scenario represents this real conflict. Using the AA ruleset, the French player(s) start the game just as the lead vehicule detonates a landmine killing driver and gunner. All troops exited the VABs. They must fight this lethal ambush from the Taliban player(s) surrounding them...
French Players: CYC & Hivemind
Taliban Players: Flyer115 and Skip
Umpire: Piers
The game starts:
The Taliban have 2 HMGs positioned at rear and front of the ambush ravin:
Straight away the French Trinomes open fire on the top of the ridges:
The Taliban fire is lethal and causes terrible casualties to the French in turn one:
By turn 3 the Taliban players satified to have caused many wounded launch assaults:
Only by turn 4 the support Gazelle arrives and opens fire on the assaulting taliban unit, killing everyone in the unit in a massive array of rockets!
But the gazelle is promptly shot down by a well aimed RPG:
By end of turn 4, the french manage to turn the game around causing large amount of casualties on the taliban surrounding them. Despite a blood bath at the bottom of the ravin, the french claim a victory having killed over 30 enemies.

That's a Mat o'War mat, isn't it? Excellent looking table - I know I'm repeating myself, but that's a REALLY nice table that's making use of pretty simple terrain features and a fine game mat.
Very impressive stuff!!!

Great AAR and awesome looking table. I am freakin freaking out here at how cool the hills and ridges look. Amazing. How was this done? What kind of table mat were you guys using? What did you place under the mat to achieve this? Anyone know where I can get one of these mats?
Your terrain features and photos are very well done.

I agree. Convince them to do a tutorial = step by step photos showing how they built this table to create these hills and ridges. I too want to know what kind of table top mat they are using here. In fact, if they refuse the tutorial, I say you should refuse them any future new release items from AA/FOF/etc. as punishment.

HEH!
The mat they're using is a well-broken in Mat o'War mat if I'm not mistaken. I'll bet Piers or Thomas could be talked into showing how they set the table up . . . although by the looks of it, they just used some books for the edges of the valley and then some hill structures for the ridges and just draped a Mat o'War over all that, pressing it into he shapes they wanted.
