Last week Sunday i played the scenario “Eight Souls on Board” from the new Day of the Rangers book together with a friend. I played the US forces, my friend the Somalies.

Image
The game table was 90 x 90 cm, a little bit larger than recommended in the book, but personally i think 90 x 90 looks better. The large houses of my friend also left no choice.

The CSAR helicopter. Ready to Fast Rope the CSAR team.

I organized my forces into four groups, two Ranger groups with one support weapon each, the two PJs and two Deltas, and in the last group the CCT, the medic and the two other Deltas.
Plan was to secure the wreck with the PJ’s and the smaller Ranger group, while the CCT group secured the western house corner and the larger Ranger group the eastern.

A team of Deltas and PJs is securing the wreck of Super Six One.

A Black Hawk is down, and more Somali gun mobs come running.

In the first round much went as planned, Sammies morale was fragile, as my friend was unable to pass his requiered morale test. The first airstrike by one of the Little Birds blasted some Somalie reinforcments, but failed to wound any of the Somalis in the neighbouring houses (the row of houses on the right in the top picture), also one of the units was shaken a second time.

The small alley to the south. This gun mob will soon retreat to the houses further south, only to be hit by an air strike.

But a little bit later things began to go to hell. First my Air Support was recalled. Second i had to learn that the veteran Somali gunmen are more than a match for my Rangers.
All four Ranger, tasked to secure the house at the eastern corner went down in fierce AK fire. I had to send the Medic and the remainig Rangers there to rescue the situation. I had to serious wounded and two Rangers without a scratch. I combined both Ranger groups and retreated to the house in the middle, the one also designated for the CCP.

Image
The Chrash side looks secured, but i already have two serious wounded and one light wounded men. Unfortunally i failed to recover any of the casualities from the Helicopter wreck.

Image
My friend rolled for reinforcments, and received for groups! Things beginn loking grim, but then i realized that two of the groups are only one man strong! But one of the other two groups are vetearan militia!

Image
The shooting sends more skinnies scurring toward the shooting.

While i am able to hold the Somali gun mobs at bay, i am unable to recover more than two casualties from the helicoter. From 5 die rolls i only managed to roll 4+ once.

Image
To make things worse, a Technical arrives to make trouble. Things beginn to look grim, but i am still able to reach a minimal victory.

Image
Groups of Somali gun men are massing behind the houses, but when they advanced i managed to wipe out two of them. But the third group wipes out all my remainig Rangers and even the Deltas in the street at the wreck. In the last second of the Battle all went to hell, and those Khat chewing Skinnies manage to pull off a great victory.

A great game and an interesting scenario, but one that leaves some questions open.
