Whatever you like!
I use small coins. 1p pieces are perfect and 2p pieces are spot on for weapons team and also multiple based insurgents.

I decided to go with #10 washers for my minis. At 0.5", they are slightly smaller than a US penny, and pleasing to my eye. Ymmv.

I use 20mm for individuals and 30mm for weapons teams. All from litko.

Pretty much anything will do, but my advice is to go for as small a size as possible. Bigger bases might look more attractive because they allow for some extra details. Yet, most Middle East bases will just be sand and maybe a tuft, so there's really no need.
There's only a disadvantage, because there are going to be a lot of time when you will be trying to squeeze as many miniatures in the same place. Maybe its because they're stacking before breaching a building, maybe they're all trying to get through the same narrow alley or maybe they're all trying to benefit from that one position with the best cover and field of fire.
Initially, I based my stuff on 2 Eurocent coins, which are about the same size as 1 pence coins. However, after I started playing Ambush Alley and realised the advantages of small bases in cluttered urban terrain, I switched to 1 Eurocent coins. They are 1,6 cm wide, as opposed to 2,1 cm wide 2 Eurocent coins, and this makes a world of difference.
Its just as stable, looks just as good, but is far, far more convenient. (I play 20mm btw)
