Can anyone help with the organisation of a Russian Airborne Platoon 2010/2011. I have read a few sources which state a lPlatoon Commander, 3 x 8 man squad and an 8 man Weapon squad with 3 x PKM - is this correct. A few other sources state a Platoon Commander and 3 x 6 man squads ( i am presuming the missing 2 from each squad wil be BMD driver and gunner). Akso does anyone know at what leavel the Kord 12.7mm HMG would be issued for Airborne troops. Any help greatfully received thanks Steve

Out of interest what is your source for the first organization. It could be an ORBAT for those which still parachute first without vehicles. The 6man squad were certainly used in the 2008 war with Georgia. Sorry can't find any allocation of HMGs.

I read this in FM100-63 chapter 5 1996 however i realise this is 1996. I am presuming the 8 man would be reduced to 6 man if BMD were used. I am after a Platoon/Company TO/E for 2010. thanks Steve

For a 6 man squad how would these now be armed, i have also heard that the RPG 16 are now being grouped in weapon squad and removed from the Rifle squads - the Rifle squads relying on RPG22/26 - is this true ????? many thanks Steve

Honest answer is I don't know. I'm familiar with the FM you mentioned, though I've never seen anything which corroborates it. The other source I've been using is the micromark sheets, mainly for the 2008 war.
Have you tried the TOE yahoo group too?

I will try the yahoo TO/E group :
Can i ask your opinion on the lastest organisation of a Russian airborne Platoon. I have read a couple of articles that the platoon has changed with lessons learnt after the Georgia 2008 war. The RPG16/7V has been removed from the squads and incorporated into a weapons squad and the RPK74 has been replaced by a PKP. 1) Platoon HQ - Platoon Leader (AKS 74) 2) Rifle Squad ( 3 Number) each Squad Leader - AKS74 with 40mm UBGL Machine Gunner (2) - PKP SAW Grenadier - AKS74 with 40mm UBGL Senior Rifleman- AKS74 Rifleman (2) - AKS74 Sniper - SVD ( 2 x RPG22/26/27 and upto 2 x RPO) 8 man squad ( Presume 6 man if BMD used) 3) Weapon Squad Squad Leader - AKS74 with 40mm UBGL Machine Gunner (3) - PKM GPMG Assistant Machine Gunner (3) - AKS74 Grenadier - RPG16/7V A 2nd RPG16/7V is allocated to Squad. RPG22/26/27 and RPO allocated as required I am unsure but would presume squad allocated BTR-D
cheers Steve

Looks pretty much like what little I've seen on the new organizations. Interesting that they have added a whole extra squad per platoon, very heavy on MGs too and only a third of the usual RPGs- wonder where they put the AT assests? up to Coy level?
Cheers,
Pete.
