Mikey, I'm looking at the OOBs in the Road to Baghdad book and looking at the SMAW trooper. Sort of torn between using a spare Vietnam era US LAW figure or cutting up and bending a Stinger gunner. Since there arent many uses for the Stinger guys yet, I'm leaning in that direction, since the rest of his gear would be right. Have you run into this yet?

Also seeing the Fedayeen use some more of my leftover VC/NVA recoilless rifles, but they are easy enough to modify with a little filing to the headgear and some black paint. Looks like I only need one of these models.

Also seeing a choice of going with the magnetic bases and building cells as needed, or building a selection of different bases and configurations to cover all the different choices. Will try out the magnetic tape on the bottom of the GHQ figure bases and see how well it holds to metal bases.

Tom if you carefully remove the stinger the smaw can be replicated by metal or plastic rod. AS for the RR if you need the Larger caliber RR i have about 10 spare luanchers (you could use the 57mm from the VC pack to cut it down for your smaw) I can send you 2 or 3 just save the ground mount from the VC one as these are from the B10 jeep set, let me know what I can do to help.....Mikey

That would be great. I'd appreciate a RR barel or two. You can send to me at

1541 S Smithville Rd
Dayton OH 45410

at your convenience. Let me know if there are things you need. My extras bin is starting to fill up, too.

Think that is the first time I'd seen the SMAW. Looks a lot like the old Redeye launcher without the seeker head. I'll try to clip off the IFF antennae first and see how that goes, then trim off the whole tube and use just a bit of stretched sprue if that doesnt work. Bend it down a bit so it's not shooting up hill. :)

While looking at modifications to micro troops, I'm thinking about cutting up some seated WW2 German halftrack passengers for the Deltas seated on the external seats on the Little Bird for Day of the Ranger scenarios. Helmets are closer to the Kevlar than US WW2 figures would be, and a little paint should take care of most of the other things. A drop of super glue and there they be. I need to set up an online photo place so I can start sharing photos of these things. After seeing somebody else's similar OH-6s in a larger scale, this idea popped into my head. I'll pull out one of my extra -6s from my Vietnam stuff and give it a shot.

Thanks. I have the 4-litter ambulance available now (I looked up the nomenclature on the GHQ "maxi-ambulance" and it fit the armored 4-litter description), and the rest when the order I just sent arrives. Well, except for the fuel truck, anyway. If you want, I'll toss in one or two of those strips of WW2 german seated passengers to cut up for your own teams. Pretty sure I had more than I need. I'll look for them tonight.

Think I have some TOWs or minigun pods around somewhere I can use to arm those -6s. I know I didnt use the ones that came with the Vietnam era -6s. A bit of modeling is in order as a break from painting my buddy's Flames of War stuff.

I have a number of the GHQ Vietnam era amtracks that I bought to do a scenario where they were ambushed while convoying supplies to a Marine outfit. From the book, The First Battle if I remember correctly. I'm thinking now to try it with Ambush Valley instead of the PK rules I used for so long. A platoon of amtracks (no infantry, just crews), escorted by 2 (4?) M-48s and 2 Ontos's vs an unknown number of VC/NVA with RRs, RPGs and HMGs. If I can pull that together, I'll post in the Scenarios thread. Good reason to have a bunch of dismounted crew bases as that was all that they had after the first few minutes.

Thanks. I'll scrounge around. My buddy's old micro armor may have that HEMMT as well, I need to sort through 2 big boxes of stuff and see. I know he wont miss one if I can find it.

I have extra 105s and 155s (WW2 but I bought for Vietnam firebases) if you can use any, along with the "summer" crews that work well for Vietnam. Needed 6 so had to have the extra pack, leaving 4 each spare. Lots of 6mm ACW and Napoleonic troops left over, too. :) My basing always uses up all the commands but always leaves leftover troops.

Riverine stuff has always been interesting as well. I have 4 PBRs and enough ATCs for a company landing, 2 monitors, and an APB or 2. Just have never found enough detail to put something together for them. Read Black Berets, Brown Water and saw some good stuff, but like always, never enough detail on the OPFOR. My Company CO in Baumholder had been a PBR boat captain but we could never get him to open up about any of it.

Onward!

The brown water navy aspect has tremendous value for scenarios.
Half the board should be river the other land , there should be bunkers on the bank and few inland with heavy weapons, RR and MMG...and say one DSHK set up inland to ambush any birds . your PBRs should be tasked with destruction of any bunkers and supression of enemy units while you land infantry and airmobile blocking forces...thats just one possibility....Mikey

My bro inlaw use to tell me how they would always get succker punched by the vc...the bad guys would have a motoriesd sanpan hanging out in mid river, when it was sure the Pig boats had spotted it theywould make a high speed dash down a canal or tributary. Of course the boats would have to investigate.
When the boats were almost close enough for an intercept the VC would volley fire RPGs and RR and MMGs at them then the sampan would beach and the crew would beat feet.
If the swabbies couldnt gain fire superiority or got hit to bad they would back off and call in the gun ships or broncos. The army would load up a Bn in ATCs and scrounge a blocking force . he said sometimes it would be over in minutes and sometimes Charlie got froggy and it went on for a few weeks to root them out.
Now being a Sailor he could not have given a TO&E if had wanted to...but it would be safe to assume anything from a 9 man cell to a full main force BN with supports could be used..

Mikey, got my CinC order of HMMVs today. I had written them an email the day after I placed the order asking to change the Mk 19 version for the TOWs, but they must not have gotten the message. Do you have any of the TOW versions you would want to trade off for some Mk 19 or 50 Cal mounts? Just the mount part, looks like they are all interchangeable on the vehicle. I'll need all 3 types as I go down the list but would be nice to have the 2 TOWs for the CAAT element. If not, I'll be placing another order with them soon so no biggy.

The Blackhawks and the Sea Knight are great. Time to dig out the clear plastic and cut out some rotors. At least the Blackhawks aren't quite as fiddly as their Hueys. The 2-part skids were a pain to attach, one side was always falling off while I waited for the glue to set up.

Still waiting on my GHQ stuff but it should be here monday or tuesday. The charge is already showing up at the bank.

I like the GHQ lineup, but had already moved to 1/6000 for modern naval because they had more coverage of different ship classes and nations. Had hoped to see more Infantry Pack 2 sets for existing infantry packs, too. The WW2 Japanese are about 25% officers as they are. Dont need that many young LTs standing around. Need more 'grunts'. But I'm one of those "buy it when I see it" types, I remember the old days when the model types were very limited and I didnt mind mixing scales a little to put a unit on the table. Putting a 1/300 M-26 next to a 1/285th Sherman wasnt a problem. Now I have too many types of Sherman available, and there are folks wanting more. :)

Tom I have only the two TOWS in my CAAT team and those I bought off a guy on the GHQ Swap shop.
Recomend you give C&C a second call and just send them back the box of gun trucks for exchange.
The tow is a turret so you do have to exchange them. do you need anything else ?
you have at Least 3 AAV7A1 with EAK and twin gun turret
2 M1A1/A2
2/3 MTVR
CAAT 2 WC with M2HB
2 WC with TOW( I know you need these)
1 Humwv 4 Litter ambulance
1 Fuel truck...

Yep, the GHQ Marine Combat Command set gave me 10 AAVTP-7s and 4 M1A1s. The order I'm waiting on will give me the MTVRs (two of which are coming your way as soon as I get the order). Got the troops, the ambulance, and the 50-cal HMMVs. I'll get the rest worked out. While I'm digging through 3 boxes of my buddy's stuff, I'll see if he didnt have some of the GHQ TOW HMMVs to stand in until I get the good ones, as well as look for the fuel trucks. Dont know what all he has, he had built several full battalions of stuff at 1 -1 in the mid 80s, so could be some HEMMTs in there. I know one "tank trap" box had a Chapparel company, including the recovery vehicle and HQ track. Gives me a scouting project to do. :) I'll also be working up my Stryker company as I go. The last bits of that should come with the MTVRs I ordered. Any word on FoF scenario books that will employ the Strykers in the near future?
