I have to hand it to all of you who scratch-build, it takes a whole lot more time than one would think. After looking over the Michael Yon sites and borrowing ideas from a number of building masters on this site, I chose to work with the different sizes of basswood from Hobby Lobby and Michaels, to standardize my walls and two different heights of buildings. Here's what I've got so far. Waiting on an order from Scenic Express for my initial layer of sandstone bricks to show through the mud & straw.
But I must say, after you figure out one, the next is easier and the third is quicker. The challenge is to not stop there but to keep on building. And I'm pleased with the progress so far, wanting to fill out a 5x8 city. I am adding another foot so I can have a little more room for roads and fields of crops here and there. And for those interested, Michael Yon's aerial photos are what really offer inspiration. Check them out if you haven't already.

I do have to apologize to the forum readers, I had my four photos of my project to date, all set aside and ready to attach to my post. Only thing was, I couldn't find any thing that allowed me to do that. And then Brad reminded me know that I needed to put my photos on something like Photobucket first. So I'm sorry for posting on a gallery without photos.
Michael.

Ok, please have patience with me, I am trying to figure out how to attach photos to this site. this works, these are photos of my first steps into creating an Afghan city. And if this works, I can post photos of what I have for sale.

Michael,
You need a complete URL to the image. Then "wrap" it in the tags. You can use the "button" that says "Img" above.

Horray! Finally. So let's go for the gold and try this again.
Lots of bare wood and the beginning of the spackle.
Oh look, right across the street, a new Afghan Mall is about to open. Shall we camp out and wait for it to open?
Thanks everyone for bearing with me. Like the old saying goes, "it takes a village to teach a child" or in this case, "someone called and left a message that their village idiot has escaped"...And for all the work it took, I'm guessing I know the village idiot.

Yes, what scale and where did that Mercedes Benz come from?

Thank you. The scale is for my 28mm Empress miniatures to fight on. I have alot of citizens/donkeys/vendors from an early Arab wargaming period that are adding to my open market areas. For those of us who wargame in 25/28mm, I must put a plug in for Bill from Koppletone Miniatures. He is keeping my supplied with some awesome variety of open air market stalls, packs of food and items to fill them, a thatched blacksmith building, and a medieval looking cemetary site, that with it's rounded roof and stone, will find it's way into my Afghan village. I haven't been finding the Toyota or Datson(sp?) vehicles (early Taliban favorites) that I originally wanted from around here lately so I have been looking on ebay. The majority of the ones shown in front of what is now the market compound area, are from Moscow. I wanted a few older Russian vehicles to give my city some authentic history. However I'm finding translation is a challenge as well as a changing availability of what is photographed. But its working and the cool thing is getting unexpected brochures on many of the vans or cans. All in Russian, but they appear to be historical of sort, as they have photos of the era by the looks of them. Eventually I will find someone who reads Russian and can tell me more. But for now, the photos ads are a cool addition.
