Clearing Al-Annaba

Back Ground

1/21 Stryker Bn which has been held by the US in Al Ashram assisting in the Training and Operational Mentoring of The Khalifs Armed Forces. They have been committed as part of a significant surge operation into the Northern City of Al-Annaba.

The Battalions mission was to provide support to the Kalif's Armed Forces in the clearance of Bayt al-Mal insurgents from the cities Masbagha sector.

After a faltering start to the clearance of the Masbagha sector and a tough few days fighting, the Bn was very much in need of a tactical pause, to resupply and rest. Here we will be joining two platoon of A Company 1/21. who have a section and elements of the platoon HQ taking refuge in a large compound in a residential area a few blocks over from the commercial area of Masbagha where we last saw the battalion in action.

Image

The battalions area is being over flown by two storm shadow UAVs sending back imagery to the Battalions main CP whilst the troops rest.

Image

North is the top of the photograph above

The building selected by two platoon is the compound on the Southern edge of the open area in the center of the picture which has reasonable fields of fire, quite open approaches and is dominated by only one of the surrounding buildings.

Image

a view of the same area from the North looking South at one of 2 platoons forward outpost

Image

Image

Image

at 02:00 local the storm shadow conducting a perimeter security check of the tempory base identified insurgent activity building up to both the east and west out of sight of two platoons sentries.

Image

The Bn CP immediately orders the platoon to stand to.

Image

whilst the ill equipped insurgents struggle to identify targets in the moonlight, but continue to gather round the base, aware that they have now lost a key element of surprise.

The Action

Having succesfully infiltrated into fire positions around the tempory base the large insurgent forced started to engage the elements of two platoon from the North and West, with the intent of drawing off the defenders from the South East part of the perimeter.

Image

This particular fire position proved to be particularly effective due to the significant strength of the building and its dominating position, During the initial fire fight the american team on the Northern sector of the perimeter took two casualtiues one turned out to be a minor wound whilst the second was a KIA. Due to the intense fire brought down by the reble teams, including a significant number of RPGs the Northern face of the tempory base started to collapse providing little cover to the US team located there.

Despite this the americans inflicted significant casualties on the Bayt al Mal insurgents. Having failed to bring about any significant change in the US position and having taken significant casualties in his fire support teams the insurgent commander decided to comitte his attack from the South East and East.

Image

Image

As the insurgents surged across the open ground under what they thought was the cover of night the quickly learned the effectiveness of the ammerican night sights. Despite the Noise of Battle few new insurgent fighters were drawn into the battle and as their numbers dwindeled the american commander commenced his phased extraction from the fort. As dawn started to break across the city the UAVs switched to low light TV to gain better immages.

Image

Image

With the sun rising fast the US troops had lost the advantage of night fighting and were caught in the open taking another casualty as they crossed the open ground with two teams whilst one remained in overwatch.

Image

Despite the casualties, the US position was now very dominant having eliminated many of the insurgents. The first two teams from two platoon quickly reached the cover of buildings across the square providing cover for the extraction of the final team

Image

At this point and after considerable time wipping up support for the attack on his mobile with other local leaders, more insurgents started to arrive, sadley a lack of leaders rendered these groups impotent

Image

Image

The elements of two platoon quickly consolidated their position and succesfully extracted themselves from the area.

Image

The US team gave the Bayt al-Mal insurgents plenty to think about. With similar success across the Units area of responsibility the City of Al-Annabas Masbagha sector has now been cleared.

Game Description

The game was played between myself and William , with William playing the US again, this time however William won in a fairly significant fashion. The Scenario was based on ambush Alley scenario 4. As ever AA continues to deliver a fast and furious funpacked game, with a significant element of uncertainty as the FOG of War cards swing the advantage around.

Awesome AAR Andy. Could you tell me what the size of the table was that you were playing on?

Play area was about 3 feet x 3 feet which is my preference for 20mm
