I always wondered what happened to Alfalfa when he grew up. Tragic.

16 years in the US Army, 9 of that was active duty. Took a 3 year break from the military then went in the reserves. Started out as a Combat Engineer and recently switched over to my civilian occupation as a Surgical/OR Tech.

I'm studying history, but always thought about going for officer in the Dutch army afterwards. So I applied for the reserves to see if I would like it, but during my medical it turned out I have a hearing condition (even though I never noticed it before). Kind of sucks.
Plenty of other useful things to do in the world though.

6 years USMC, and 4 years in the reserves.

I only did my year of obligatory military service at the Spanish Navy in the 90's, but I was just a civilian in uniform, as the rest of the conscripts. Two years after I was licenced, the conscription army was substituted by a professional voluntary force.

No matter - conscript or volunteer, "civilian in uniform" or professional, it doesn't make a difference in the long run. You served, and that's what matters. Thank you for that service - in fact, thank everyone who served in any country's military for your service. We all sleep more safely on account of that service.
And, Merry Christmas to all.
