I am thinking of beginning some work on a modern but fictional conflict between the United States and a South American nation. When I do this I like to keep it somewhat feasable. My two ideas so far are a conflict in Colombia with U.S. forces vs Cartels and FARC, the other idea is a conflict between the U.S. and Venezuela with some possible Iranians and/or other Middle-Eastern based terrorist groups involved.
Which one do you all think would be better?

Don't forget the Venesuela/ Russian connection. Could make for some interesting alternate history Cold War Hot stuff.

Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, Narco Terrorists, and Cartels VS. Carribean nations, US, French maybe???.
Add a third option to the poll. Make it a fictional nation so you can invite anyone you want to to the dance.

Why choose? Do 'em both. The US (directly or through Columbia) honks off Venezuela, they invade Columbia, the US, Cubans, and Russians intervene, and (in a wierd twist of fate) the cartels and Columbia put their differences aside to repel the Venezuelans. Voila - lots of possibilities!

If you did a modern version, it would be more likely that the cartels would fight FOR the Venezualans. Venezuela pumps a lot of money and weapons into the border cartels to keep Columbia de-stabilized. What's bad for Columbia is good for Venezuala - as long as Columbia is torn by internal strife, it isn't able to efficiently capitalize on its own oil reserves.
Of course, I doubt that things would be much different without the Venezualan interference. Columbia is another one of those places that will probably never gel into an actual nation-state.

Maybe an area-destabilizing conflict involving both Colombia and Venezuela would be the way to go.
We also have AUC from Colombia that has made cross border raids against FARC camps within Venezuela. I know Chavez himself accused us (The United States) of backing the AUC in an attempt on his life.
The area has tons of potential as a flashpoint.
I have a lot of experience with the region but a lot has changed since I was working active missions there. I'll be researching it and massaging it for a future conflict zone.
