If you can find them then Jerry Pournelle's 'There Will Be War' series of anthologies is pretty good. Same with his 'War World' series...

Highly recommended: Robert Frezza's trilogy A Small Colonial War Fire In A Faraway Place Cain's Land
Especially the first two will give you hundreds of ideas for small battles/ large skirmishes often between very asymmetric forces ( Colonial troops, Regulars, Rebel colonists, armed mobs) No Aliens though!
Aside from that, really good reads with some of the most charismatic characters ever. You'll never forget the Variag = Lt. Col. Anton Vereshagin, Maj. Matti Harjalo or Lt Danny Meagher.
Subtitle of the first book is ' Corporate stupidity made a world rebel. So the Imperial Task Group has to set things right.'

uncleaka wrote: I'd like to second the recommendation for The Fleet series. David Drake also has two other good Military Sci-Fi series. Hammer's Slammers is the first one, which has it's own set of wargaming rules published. The second being the Republic of Cinnabar Navy series. I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers that The Fleet had a computer wargame based on it called Star General], which was unfortunately well before its time.

howabout "A Desert called Peace" by Tom kratman, I've only started reading it but, 20/21stC human tech on the only colony world that earth has; most of misfits & people that don't want to fit in shipped off to a earth-like world & left to grow & stew for a few 100 years. Multiple countries/races. Basically earth as it is now mixed up abit given a slightly higher tech in some things & lower in others.

I have used material from the Hammer's Slammers novel Rolling Hot for scenarios for several different rules sets. Its a great read too!

Fallen Dragon by Peter F. Hamilton, deals with mercenaries and guerrilla warfare in the (not so) far future.

Altered Carbon, Broken Angels and Woken Furies which, whilst not straight war stories, deal with near future worlds and the ex-military protagonist Takeshi Kovacs. These tech-noir thrillers rolls along with plenty of brutal action and stunning visualisation of a future that feels achingly possible. More a skirmish setting than battle inspiration. Nonetheless, the ideas, description and utilization of the technology of weapons, gear, vehicles and EW a perfect for a TW timeline and setting. Fantastic stuff! Cheers, Johnny

Yes, altered Carbon is a great novel, full of humor 'a la film noir', definitely a must read.

I just finished the Stark's War series by John G Hemry. It's a trilogy, Stark's War, Stark's Command, and Stark's Crusade. IMO pretty good combat SF. All action takes place on the Moon, and the author gets the environment pretty right. Other than a little bit of some deus ex machina toward the end of the last book, I give this series 4 *s.

Subtitle of the first book is ' Corporate stupidity made a world rebel. So the Imperial Task Group has to set things right.' Tried reading the first book but the story didn't flow very well for me. Cool setting but all the different characters made it a bit confusing (at least for me).

Seconding "Stark's War" on low-grav warfare. Lee Stephen's "Epic" has nice x-commy theme if you can live through the constant religious references.
