On the Morning of May 26 1940 as allied troops beat a hasty retreat from Europe. A lone FW 200 Condor passenger plane of the German airline Lufthansa lands at Rineanna airfield in Co. Clare. On board are 26 members of the elite Brandenburg Regiment...
Airfield defense was in the hands of D company 22 infantry Battalion Irish Defense forces backed up with some armored cars and A company LDF made up of veterans of the War of independence.
At the same time two kreigsmarine disguised armed trawlers were making their way up the Shannon Estuary.
These were to be met by an IRA unit and a German agent known as Herr Ludwig who would guide the naval landing party to the airfield...
Brandenburg Objectives
Secure the two transport aircraft as they contain an anti tank gun and additional ammo supplies and explosives.
Destroy the Irish aircraft by turn 2 or they get airborne thus giving Irish forces air support.
Secure the Terminal and Control tower hold for one turn while they establish radio contact with the inbound airborne troops.
Kreigsmarine objective
Suppress local defenses thus preventing the runway being blocked and allowing German forces to land at the airfield.
The Table
The game started with the German plane landing and the Brandenburgers storming out of the civilian airliner all guns blazing! Within seconds, many German and Irish troops lay dead or wounded accross the airfield. Then the Brandenburgers began laying down fire from their 50mm mortar as on squad began to destroy the parked aircraft.
After a short delay the KM sailed into view and attacked from the river. Their deck gun laid down heavy fire throughout the game and caused many casualties, aswell as destroying parked aircraft and one of the Irish armoured cars.
Despite a brave and ferocious defence, the Irish were eventually overwhelmed, and in the dying light of the day, the Germans secured the control tower to guide in the Fallschirmjager on-route from Germany...
Brandenburgers storm the airfield defences and destroy the parked aircraft while sustaining heavy losses...
The Kriegsmarine arrive and give fire support to the Brandenburger troops holding part of the airfield...
As the assault goes in the irish defence starts to crumble despite their brave efforts...
Was probably the most enjoyable game of F-on-F we have had so far. The scenario was the first in our clubs 'Fall Grun' campaign designed by our club member Brian, who also painted and converted all the Irish kit.
Its was a very bloody game but the Germans managed to win through and take control of the airfield...
I look forward to round two.
