Were going to play our first game on Saturday just using the infantry rules to keep it simple.
The basic scenario would be a Soviet Hind helicopter has been forced to land due to mechanical problems. A soviet 10 man section has been sent out to provide ground security while the repairs are carried out. A small afghan town stands in the way. the Soviets will have two light machine guns in addition to their AKs and be rated as D8s.
The locals will be rated D6s but how many should there be? I have painted up the following:
24 guys - they have a sniper rifle, 2 light MGs and an RPG. There is also a 2 man M-60 team.
I had planned to have the locals in 3 forces - the M-60 team and then two other groups.

Welcome! Cool idea for a DIY scenario!
Looking at the scenarios in the "Day of the Rangers" book, I would do it like this:
Have 2 scenarios; 1 where the Soviet unit is getting through the town to get to the helicopter. Objective is to get through the town, and escort the repair guy (dependant). Points for getting to the end, not really for killing anyone. 1 where the Soviet unit has gotten through the town (they can't take casaulties with them from the previous scenario!), and now are in more rural terrain with the heli in the middle of the board. Win if they avoid casaulties and get the heli repaired (and taking off!).
At d6 vs d8 troops, I would guess just under double the number of afghans vs soviets. It should be a fast scenario, so you can always add a fireteam to one side or the other if you find one side wins easily.

Nice AAG! I also follow your BKC and CWC stuff!
Although the last photo it said "left a number of casualties behind". Does that mean you left a trail of dead enemy, or did your team actually abandon their casualties? I haven't seen that done before..

Well they were the only survivors of the second fire team, so there was no one left to rescue them!
