Has anyone thought or have used plastic 1:87 scale model railway figures as zombies? I have seen so many of these going really cheap on E-Bay and as I need more zombies they appear to be a quick and cheap way to swell the ranks. I can get 100 of them for £4.

Has anyone had experiences using these in 15mm games? Are they suitable, cheap tat, waste of money or a good idea?

Jim

I bought and used Z scale train figures from the same source last year I mounted them 4-6 to a stand gave them a heavy wash of rotting flesh and picked out a few with red paint on faces and torsos. and went to town with them . they even kinda worked with my Irregular minnies 6mm zombies. My inspiration was a few Photos on line of folks who used the models your considering as zombies . IMHO its a cheap easy way to mass produce zombies that lets you spend more time painting the metal ones you really like for detail.....Mikey

Mikey,

Thanks for the info. I think I will take the plunge and spend the princely sum of £4 and see what happens.

How did it go? I'm interested in trying this out myself.

In a word AWFUL, hence my lack of further posts on the subject. The figures were about a head smaller than the 15mm Peter Pig figures and stick thin. I tried fixing them to thicker bases to make them look taller but they just didn't go at all. In addition to this about 40% of the figures I got were sat down and 20% were two figures "hugging" each other! This left not a lot of figures for my money.

In the end I went with yet more Rebel minis zombies and spent some time converting them. Upshot is I now have about 70 RM zeds which is more than enough for any AZ game.

I have used them and they work just fine with the larger 15mm figures.

That is too bad, I have thought about picking up some railroad people and using them for civilians in my FOF games -- perhaps that is not a good idea.

HO scale should be fine, but as Baz has discovered, N-scale is probably out =[

I may look stupid...

No seriously, the figures I got said HO scale -even on the packaging. I had worried they may have been "giants amongst men" with my 15mm figs, but sadly not. Those figures that did come standing were about shoulder height to a PP figure with a body mass index less than a catwalk model...

Perhaps in China HO means more than the scale of model railways

Sorry, its my sarcasm again...

I did ask for samples but the bod on E-Bay said it wasn't worth it to them to send a few figures out and as I had seen HO scale railway figures in the local railway shop (much more expensive at £3 for a single (poorly) pre painted figure) I took the plunge. Never again.

That's odd. My 1/87 railroad figures from China are a bang on match for 15mm stuff. Almost all standing in pretty neutral poses as well. Great for filler while metal 15s are the character zombies.

I bought 2 batches 1 in N scale and 1 in z scale to provide fillers for my metal and plastic character zombies.
I got 6mm irregular zombies 2 give the z scale figures some zip and bought some 10mm metal zombies and police from Jeff Dye when he had Minfigs USA to provide zip to the N scale RR plastic..I bought them unpainted (ones from China)..Gave them a base coat and painted thier clothes and gore did all flesh in rotting flesh then a black wash and bada boom bada bing.
