From Commando HQ

We are very pleased to have received our first greens, figures and weapons, for this period. Please check http://www.commandominiatures.com/flash-signal.html for photographs and details.

Infantry of this type are also suitable for the conflicts in Aden, S Arabia, Cyprus in a variety of End-of Empire locations during the 1960s and 70s.

An update will be issued as soon as the first cast figures are available for purchase.

Yes, just to confirm the figures are 28mm. We have updated that page of the website to ensure clarity.

These look sharp!

It would be great to see these next to a ruler...or figures from another line...for comparison.

Also, sharing ROUGH timeframes for the "Op For" would be veryy helpful.

Update from Commando HQ

First pictures of our pre-production casts are now shown on our website. So far we have four basic figures, two each from our forthcoming British Infantry and Command packs. Photos on the site illustrate the figures with some of the variations of headgear, weaponry and backpacks that will be available. Unfortunately the first casting of the SLR has not been a success and it will have to be re-sculpted. It is one of those items where castability has to take precedence over scale accuracy. This will mean a slight delay to the production of figures armed with SLRs and the SLR weapon packs.

We are pushing ahead on all fronts at the moment with a range of corrugated iron and sandbagged revetments, huts and observation posts also under development. Very shortly this fascinating but completely unwargamed period will at last be served by figures and equipment.

Commando Miniatures News

There has been a lull in dispatches from Commando HQ but we are pleased to say that this is because we have been working feverishly behind the scenes. First up we should reveal the bad news, which is that we are not quite ready to sell anything...yet, but that day is getting much closer.

We are delighted to be able to announce that we have a variety of new 28mm models nearing completion and which soon will be available. These include the following -

SWB Land Rover Series I/II - We have just received the master and this item will be going straight to casting so it may well be that our Vehicle Division is going to beat our Personnel Division into production.

Two more British infantry sculpts are ready to go to casting, this time an officer or NCO with a Sterling 9mm SMG and a machine gunner equipped with the post-war version of the Bren gun, the L4A1/4.

In addition more equipment has been sculpted including, an SAS Bergen back pack, SAS head, M1 Garand; M1/2 carbine and M3 “grease gun”. The SLR is back from re-modeling and we hope to have it re-cast shortly so that it will be available for the remaining SLR armed figures. The problem with this item has been mainly responsible for the delay in the release of our 1960s British figures. The US equipment will be used in our next range of figures which will be Indonesian Para-Commandos and Marines.

The SAS head and Bergen will allow the basic figures to be converted. The SAS operated extensively in both S Arabia (Aden and Dhofar) and Borneo during the 1960s and early 70s. Standard operational unit was the four man patrol, usually armed with the Aramalite AR15. As the scent of shaving cream could be detected at long distances under the rainforest canopy, very unmilitary beards and long hair were the norm for SAS troops on long distance patrols, adding to their irregular appearance.

Finally, we have also just completed the masters for a series of buildings and fortifications of the type used in Malaysia in the 1960s. Items will include a machine gun or observation post, an accommodation/store hut plus various shapes and sizes of defensive barricades. All the items depict typical British equipment used in Forward Location Bases, constructed from corrugated iron and sand bags.

Given the delays we have had so far, we are loath to make any further promises for a definite release date, but our aim is to have items ready for Salute in April where we will be represented on the Scheltrum Miniatures stand. Figures for purchase on the Commando Miniatures website should therefore also be available either just before or just after that date.

Check our website www.commandominiatures.com for further details.

It all sounds good, but I'm having some trouble with the pictures. It seems I can't click on them to get a larger version, so I can't see any details on those tiny thumbnails.

I noticed the same thing: the pix aren't links from thumbnails to hi-res pix.

However, from what I can see, they look good.

All of the figs (so far) are Brits...which is fine...but I'll need someone for them to fight! Since these blokes are a few months away from appearing on my painting table, what would be a good source for the "op-for"?

For the record, I'm thrilled to hear about this line as it will allow me to "push" FoF in my local club. Most of the members are hesitant to play "moderns". I don't have any stuff for 'Nam (yet? :))...so I've been doing Soviets in Afghanistan.

Commando Miniatures will be at Salute on Scheltrum Miniatures Stand, TD26 (courtesy of Sholto Humphries of Scheltrum). Salute is the UK’s largest and most prestigious wargames show, to be held at the at the Excel Centre, London Docklands on Saturday 21st April 2012.

Current Status

We very much understand that many people have been waiting patiently for the arrival on the market of Commando Miniatures figures and vehicles, so we are pleased to be able to announce that some items will be available for purchase at Salute. Initially these will be weapons and equipment packs, and we are pleased to say, some figures. We are awaiting a delivery of a large production run from the caster which will include more figures and the Land Rover - if these are not available by Salute we will take orders from Salute customers for despatch as soon as they have been received at Commando HQ.

Range Development

The Bren gun and Sterling armed figures have been trial cast and have been included in the production run. Trial casts have also been made of the re-sculpted SLR, the SAS head, Bergen rucksack and various other weapons. The latter items have not yet gone forward for a production run. The plan is to produce an” SAS kit” consisting of head, Bergen and alternative weapons so the basic figure can be converted to the typical “SAS on patrol” look.

The following new greens have also been sculpted : -

2 x British infantry with SLRs

We are pleased to announce that Britain’s opponents in the Indonesian Confrontation are on their way.

Figures will include: NCO with SMG, 3 x Para-Commandos with M1 Carbines, officer with map (open handed for weapon alternates), 1 x Para-Commando with Garand.

Following a succesful launch at the Salute Show, Commando Miniatures first figures are now available on line, covering British infantry on patrol. Conversion packs for customisation are also available and being rapidly added to.

Next up will be the Indonesians and when we saw the greens it was immediately apparent that these figures were suitable for other SE Asian nationalities that used mainly US equipment and weapons.

Finally we are proud to announce that our first vehicle, a Series I/II SWB Land Rover is now also available. Surprisingly this ubiquitous Post-war vehicle has not previously been available in 28mm (1/56) scale.

In the longer term as well as figures and vehicles , our aim is to provide buildings, terrain and rules, in fact everything a wargamer would need to get started in this fascinating period.

For more details check out the website at www.commandominiatures.com
