Rather than start new threads for a somewhat limited audience, thought I would just start a single ongoing one to ask my questions and get answers that others might have interest in if they use this scale.

For starters, I'm basing squad leaders with one of the fire teams. When I was looking at my 1990 Iraqi Republican Guard troops in the Micromark materials, they mention a platoon leader. No platoon HQ, just the leader. My initial thought was to put him into one of the fire teams of the platoon, but looking at a Soviet unit structure from the CWGH module, the platoon leader stays with the vehicle. With the rifle strength dictated by the capacity of the tracks, that makes sense to me. The LT just serves as one of the vehicle commanders as he commands the unit. I'll probably put a couple of bases together with 3 figures representing bailed out crews, and one of them will have a leader figure. Just wondered what others would or have done for this sort of thing.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Tom

while I think its a good idea in some respects there still needs to be a senior sgt to direct the activities of the dismounts ...so I would simply declare one of the stands that include a Sqd Ldr to be the senior sgt and mark it in some way so it is different from the others.

Thanks. I had put the kneeling pointing guy on as the platoon leader, so he becomes the senior leader in there now. Just like we are starting to see Vietnam era writing from both sides, it may take 20 more years to hear from Iraqi vets about their experiences in the first Gulf War, unit structures in reality as opposed to TO&E, that sort of thing. Things like the MicroMark sheets have lots of good stuff, but dont cover this sort of small detail. Always great to hear how others arrange their forces.

when I get cought up on the mariad of armies im doing id like to do a British and french battle group.
Some thing about AMX30s and ERC90s and Vabs , and of course the chally 1 C&C makes such a nice model with the option for a TC in the hatch....Im also working on a coversion kit for the 4x4 and 6x6 cougars to turn them into Joint EOD rapid response vehicles....and the C&C Humwv 4 seater soft top converted to a Iraqi Showani SF dumvee if I get them done im going to ask al from gamecraft and see if he would like to do them in mass. that way folks could just order the kits and glue them on ...Mikey

Interesting. I've missed so much of the nomenclature since I retired. Thought I was a bit of a tread-head and tried to keep up with these things, but looking at the GHQ catalog and the FoF vehicle lists, I see a whole lot of stuff I need to look up.

My buddy got the USMC Task Force Combat Command set for me in payment for my painting on his Flames of War stuff, so I have some new toys to tinker with. Sitting here at work putting little turrets on the AAVP-7s right now. Tonight I may have time to put the MGs on the M-1s. Good timing since you had that list of Marines up for Falujja. Told him about 2 other Combat Commands we could use, including that MRAP set and the Deltas with the special Super Jolly Greens. Now I just need time between his units to start working on these.

Just remember they won't actually be D boy figures but reg modern US individual Infantry but that combat command comes with 40 USD worth of whirlybirds....while it wont save you big bucks its still less then if you bought the aircraft separately...

And even cheaper when I'm not paying for it.

Yep, I don't see a need for the aircraft right now, but will likely find a need down the road. After the game I played in at Cincycon, with a Sea Knight bringing in the SEALS, I will likely pick up one of that type for when I do pick up the Enduring Freedom module. At some point, I should have enough troops of roughly the right type, if a bit generic, to do most of the modules.

The AAVC-7s pictured on the Combat Command box had duffle bags and packs stowed around the outside of the vehicle, so I was a litle surprised to find the models were clean versions. May have to dig out a little putty and see if I can manage to make up some stowage of my own for them. That was what sounded so cool about the In Service brand stuff. Dont think they are around anymore.

I recommend Aircraft if just for the collective aspects of our hobby , But do recommend you swap out any brass rotors with plastic disks for those you might use on the table.
I was very close to talking Ian Armstrong into doing stowage kits in our scale managed to get him to do spare road wheels for AFvs. His Stuff is available thru H&R and can be seen on their site...also available are the following WW2 German bus with trailer (both can be painted and replicate modern Bus nicely)
VW Bug
Modern British DROPS palletized cargo system...
Modern shipping container loads for above...
ISM was a good idea executed badly lol the stowage and other kits where really great sadly they modeled them on GHQ vehicles instead of separately, the unique vehicles they did produce were gap fillers that worked well..so yes a little Sculpey goes a long way...

I've got the older GHQ clear plastic "rotors" from the Hind and Hip models, which are probably big enough to copy for those -53s and maybe the Sea Knight. I have plenty of the clear pastic bits from minis packs that I can mark and cut out for them. I knew there was a reason I didnt throw away those bubbles from the minis packs. More experimentation. May go back and replace the rotors on my Hueys that way, too.

What trucks would be good generic trucks to use for Iraq, Iran, and other non-US or Nato scenarios where trucks are called for in the OOB? Sort of thinking the Soviet GAZ-66 for the moment. The FoF Primer OOBs list trucks quite a bit, so I want to be able to run some of those as we train up for the bigger scenarios.

Ural 6x6 types are probably a good bet too.

GAZ 66 is the two ton and was widely exported , and as joe suggested the ural 6x6 is another great choice.
I think C&C offer the tanker and command versions and the standard versions can be modeled with or with out the canvas top which adds to ease of conversion or Kitbash....BTW H&R have just realeased the AUSSIE BUSHMASTER and BV206S and BV206 sculpted by Ian Armstrong while not GHQ level they are great sculpts and do mix nicely with GHQ and C&C. if you have ever had the pleasure of seeing Ians stuff its great and personaly I would buy it confident it will mix well with any collection...check out his modern UK truck kits Leyland Drops and flatbeds and Pingsuer 1.5 tonner......I would replace the weapons kit on the Bushmaster with GHQ or C&C tho.......Mikey

What GHQ packs do you suggest for the Syrians and Islamist fighters in the first scenario from the core rule book? I have a picture of Syrian militarty that I think works with the Irregulars wearing the berets, but wasnt sure if these "foreign fighters" might fit that or some other pack, and really have no idea on the Iraqi irregulars, Fedayeen, etc. Thanks for your suggestions.

you cant go wrong using the Brush fire warriors and weapons pack for Iraqi Reg Troops.
Syrian street fighters I would use the Sub saharan Iregulars with the shemagh over their heads.
Fedayeen I would go with the bald fig from the pack above and paint them with Black shirts and trousers
and paint the bandanas on their faces and black headbands to represent the fedayeen.
you will have to mix a few to get a weapons mix but overall you can get the look you want.

Thanks. I'll be seeing I-94 Enterprises over the weekend and will add these to my want list. If he has it, his GHQ and CinC stuff is 10-20% below retail, so I want to get as much of these as I can from him. Looks like the Brush fire warriors and I are going to become very well acquainted in the future. :) Got a start on my Taliban/Al Qada figures last night but my painting time is aimed at a painting job for a friend's Flames of War Gibergsjaegers for now. Any extra time I can find goes to painting up squads for FoF.
