Dear all: Does anyone know what the Vallejo colour for desert tan for USMC LAV-25s (as per this photo: http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s235 ... i367ei.jpg) and other Western vehicles is? I tried Iraqi Sand but it seemed to come out too yellow. Any thoughts gratefully appreciated!

In my opinion not a single one of the available colours does match desert tan US vehicles. You will probably end up mixing your own paint. Here is how I did it.

I've been using Krylon camo colors sand and it's darned close. Putting one of my 1/285th models up next to the screen with that photo, it's hard to say it's not exactly right, but scale and slight differences in the way a monitor displays colors can make a difference.

I have been trying to think this through since this question was first posted. I have never been able to find a good match. I finaly settled on testers Modern desert tan dry brushed with valejo iraqi sand with a brown wash. I will have to see if I can find rolfs and toms suggestion. The good news is in the field most vehicles suffer weathering from slightly faded to almost white..I remember marveling at the different colors when ever I saw multible units vehicles parked side by side in Iraq. So you can never totaly be really wrong about US desert tan or Cark tan.

I will get myself one of these AK Interactive colours - hope they really are as good as you say, Taco_bat.

@Taco: is the AK Interactive colour only available for airbrushers? The only one I found is thinned down in the pot for the use with airbrushes. I would have needed one to brush on....

One key thing I learned years ago was that there is no such thing as a standard color. May be an FSN and paint chip and all sorts of supporting evidence but paint lots dont always come out the same, factory paint is often different for each factory (OD Green in WW2 was all over the sprectrum depending on what factroy something came from), and weathering. I wish I had something like the current Krylon spray camo colors when I needed a touch up on my M-151s or CUCV in the 80s. Sure would have beaten the gloss beige I used as sand for the bumper before painting on bumper numbers with a cigarette filter as a brush. In the "field", troops do what they need to do to meet the requirement. Mikey, check out the PX and see if you can find a can. Here at Wright Patterson AFB, they run about $3 for a large spray can, dirt cheap compared to the FoW custom colors. At the very least, it makes a great primer and base coat for dry-brushing with your favorite shades.

The new Humbrol 237 Desert Tan looks quite promising - anyone tried it yet?
