If you are interested in simulating Operation Enduring Freedom battles, I'm finding the following to be a very good read:

Image

I particularly like the maps of the various engagements, which use a 3D perspective rather than an overhead view, and show terrain in good detail as well as the positions and movements of the units involved. I'm sure I can make use of them for FoF engagements.

I'm also learning about Taliban tactics and how they might be applied to FoF. One thing that sparked my interest was the habit of Taliban units getting between two British/NATO units, preventing them from firing for fear of hitting friendlies in the LoF. I will consider extending the LoF beyond target units now in FoF, to prevent British units firing on Taliban which are in front of friendlies.

The rules already cover that any element CIV or otherwise within 2 inches of LOF measured from center of target. must also roll for casualties. So in effect if you fire at a unit between you and another friendly element that friendly element will also roll for casualties, as it is centerline to the LOF....Mikey

Thanks for your replies everyone.

One strange thing I've noticed is that everywhere on the web, the operation in the book is called operation "Snake Pit", not "Snake Bite" as the book has it. There was an operation "Snake Bite" but it seems to have taken place the previous year. Has anyone else noticed this?

Regardless of whether the name of the operation is correct, it's a great read! It's not all fighting either, as the book goes into great detail on the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the battle and the recollections of many of those involved, from British or American Private right up to the President of Afghanistan.

So the only copy I see for this book is a pocket book, so does this version still contain these 3D maps you mention?

I also see the same author has a 2nd book called Into the Viper's Nest: The First Pivotal Battle of the Afghan War - which appears to be on the same battle. Anyone seen this book?

I got the Kindle edition and it had the maps but they were split into 4 quarters for easier viewing in that format, which was not ideal. I can't imagine why the maps would be not be in all editions.

This does seem a bit strange. I was not aware of this other book, but writing about the same 3-day period in two separate books seems like overkill. From the reviews of this other book on Amazon I get the impression the focus is slightly different (more political than military) but then again, the "Snakebite" book covers the surrounding military, diplomatic and geopolitical situation as well to a certain degree. I doubt I will buy the "Viper's Nest" book.

[EDIT]

It turns out these books are one and the same. "Operation Snakebite" is the original UK edition, whilst "Into the Viper's Nest" is a reprint with some extra information for the US market.
