I have started a little project just for the fun of it. The background is that I like to build things, especially tanks and buildings. So when my friend Oskar (Ogge) on this forum, suggested a AA table in 6mm I decided to build it.

After some thinking this is a beginning of the project. All in all it will be 4 tiles of 20*20 cm each. They are almost 100% modular, so the terrain can be a bit varied. Figures will be mounted on strips of plasticcard, regulars 2-3 figures per strip and insurgents 2-5 per strips. The strips will be different shaped. Vehicles are mounted singurarly on washers. Vehicles will be from GHQ as the figures.

All buildings are being built from plasticcard.

Above is the tiles with drawings on where the buildings are going to be plus some buildings so far. Alltogether it will be 32 buildings on the 4 boards+ some walls and such.

First I build the houses a bit "rough" measure, cut and glue. After that I plan to sandpaper them a bit and add detail such as some railings, doors, AC components on the roofs and so on. Then I will paint them with textured paint before painting them. So far about 1/3 of the buildings are past stage one ( rough building)

We¥ll see how it turns out...

Looks great so far.

One hint from past experience, be sure to test fit the fire teams and buildings before you glue the buildings down. I have found teh hard way that my fingers are bigger than I thought. Everything fit great inside the outlines on the board, but somehow when I put the walls up there just wasn't room any more...

I definitely want to see morephotos as this progresses. I think the semi-modular game board is a great idea, especially in small scale.

Thanks for the tips! I have measured that all roads and junctions are at least 22mm wide. This to make sure that vehicles fitted on 20mm washers will fit.

I will use GHQ:s individual US modern infantry and Muj fighters. They will be based on "kidney" shaped pieces of plastic card, US soldiers two per piece and insurgents 2-5. I will make quite a few insurgents so that there are plenty of "change". A US fireteam of 4 soldiers will be made up of two playing pieces. There must be a few modifications to LOS rules and there must be a bit of book keeping as it is too difficult to see individual soldiers in this scale.

I have learned from experience that planning is the mother of all wargaming. Thats why I drew outlines on the boards to make sure that all buildings will fit and models and figures can move ok.

The project is roughly divided in three parts. Planning and drawing each building on paper. The building the houses with the templates from the drawings. I first finish all the buildings major parts. After that I put on some details. Finally painting, washing and drybrushing.

The figures I will paint very impressionistic, few bright colors. The figures are first sprayed black and will then painted. Faces and hands one blob each of flesh. Light sand for uniforms and bright/light green for equipment. Some black will be left to give a little depth.

I also have a few ideas about helicopters, but those those are so cool I will keep them to myself until I have pictures to show them... :D (not that helis are part of the game but it will look very cool, at least I think so...)

I would love to see close up pic of your buildings. Have you seen Allen Rockwells line of buildings look for gamecraft minis in the vendors section of this forum. while I understand why you want to mount regulars on a strip my personal choice will be a magnitised strip or movement tray for individual mounted figures. May i sugest that instead of modifying the rules just visualise a fireteam with a 4 cm lenth moving and a 8cm posible frontage in defensive position..thus if you canot see more then 2 cm of the unit measured as in the rules you do not have LOS/LOF as per the rules. I am a little stumped when it comes to my helos and UAVs so im looking forward to your "cool Ideas " for your aircraft 6mm rules....mikey

Nice one. Keep us posted.

I based my GHQ mods with 2 to a base and same for bad guys. Face the guys in differing directions helps them look better when there are 2 or 3 bases.

Also, why base the vehicles?

A little update

Each of the four tiles have a slightly different ìthemeî one will consist mainly of shanty town shacks, one of nicer ìArabicî style houses, one with a large gov¥t type building and one with mixed with a marketplace and such.

Some pieces of terrain will be removable such as a downed helicopter, roadblocks and such. This is to make it possible to customize the playing are more, even if it is modular to start with.

When all the buildings are done I will start detailing them. Fill in gaps with putty, sand down rough edges, put railings/windowsills on the buildings and some stuff that makes the buildings look ìrealî and detailed and not like square plastic boxes! This step is important not to overdo, with over 30 buildings detailing them can take forever. I want to keep a balance between ìenoughî details and ìtoo much but very goodlooking detailsî. I like to build but I would also like to finish the projectÖ

Some pictures of the buildings. Buildings for two boards are done, one board is almost done and the last board looks rather emptyÖ

Two pictures of some of the troopers that will fight! A M1A1, Bradleys, Hummers and Lav 25. You can see how I have based the regulars. Insurgents will be the same but will also have larger bases with more figures.

What I will use in figures and tanks

GHQ US modern infantry.
GHQ Mujaheddins
GHQ Mujaheddins heavy weapons
GHQ Arabic civilians.
GHQ Toyotas with guns for Technicals.
Assorted vehicles
Heroics and Ros helicopters

Unfortunately my camera has decided to give up. I think IÂ¥ll need a new battery or this will be a very boring blogg...

I have built more houses during the week end. Only three buildings left. After that I will start to sandpaper all the joints. If the joint is too big IÂ¥ll use some putty to smoothen it out. As soon as the camera is working again there will be more pictures!

Just a few pictures, not much more will be done during this week. Unfortunately IÂ¥ll have to work... Hopefully more pictures after the week end with some real progress!

Only three buildings to go until its time to paint and detail the houses.

The sharpeyed viewer will notice that some buildings are smaller than the corresponding markings on the tile, this is on purpose. The house will have a walled in garden that covers the rest of the marked space.

Nice work. The only thing I hate about the GHQ modern US is that the SAW gunner is prone. Looks stupid.

[img][/img]

Some almost finished vehicles and figures. The vehicles are painted with Vallejo colors. I mixed Iraqi sand and yellow ochre as base color. When that was dry I gave them a wash of GW Devlan mud. A drybrush of iraqi sand was applied over that. Then I picked out some details such as tires, markings on the tank and such. Windscreens will be painted darkblue. Some more details will be painted

The modern infantry was fairly easy. I painted the uniform with the same mixture as the vehicles. Equipment was painted in a mix of olive-grey and iraqi sand. Hands and faces was painted skintone. "Metalparts" on the weapons got a mixture of black and silver, not realistic but makes it looks a bit better. I left quite a lot of black around the painted areas to create some contrast. It is my opinion that the smaller the scale the "brighter" and "lighter" the colors on figures has to be. I also think that figures should look good from a distance of about 1-1,5 feet. Thats why I leave so much black. "Too much" color on the figures makes the look blurry from that viewing distance, the colors just blend together. To paint them more detailed looks good when you look at the figure from 2 inches but at the gaming table it just blends together. On the other hand, if I wanted to paint the realisticly I would just paint the entire figure iraqi sand and nothing more, but that would look very boringÖ

Some figures I might paint slightly different to distinguish them as special forces. In that case, they will get black helmets and a different color on the uniform. Or is that to overdo things?

Bases will be covered in white glue, very fine sand and painted with flat earth with a heavy drybrush of iraqi sand and a light drybrush of white.
Insurgents will be my next effort. I just have to order the figures from GHQ. Also get some technicals from them.

Should I focus on Afghanistani insurgents or Somali ones? Or a mixture of both? I might use Heroics and Ros for Somalis as they are slightly smaller than GHQ figures, ha ha talk about small differencesÖ

What colors are helicopters in Afghanistan and what were they in Somalia. I have some apaches, Blackhawks, and Vertol helis.
