Cool report, Donough. You do a bang-up job on your blog, and I am constantly checking in. Great stuff.
As to your question about using aerials, I use them all the time for my job as a civil engineer; however, I have not used them much for gaming. The quality you can get from, say, Bing, is pretty nice, especially with the Bird's Eye View. Of course, this is for more urban environments here in the US. I doubt you have that coverage in Afghanistan. I know Micheal Yon will occasionally use Google Maps to show areas where he is reporting.

Afternoon - Day 1
The Taliban, without good intelligence on the strength of the British unit attempt to surround and overwhelm them with a decisive enveloping movement. If they can take control of three important landmarks they will be able to dominate the area entirely.

Evening - Day 1
The British, though they are under severe pressure, ascertain that a heavy mortar is pummelling the airbase at Qandahar from nearby. They put together a scratch force to assault the position and put the mortar tube out of action.

Thanks Shawn
Morning - Day 2
With the Taliban offensive well under way, the forces at Qandahar Air Base are stretched to breaking point hunting down Taliban artillery sites. Despite this British command insists on sending a relief mission to Arghandab consisting of a Viking IFV with a hand-picked Royal Marine section aboard.

These are really great write-ups, Donogh. I have been really enjoying the games, and the storyline is fantastic. Of course, it would be great for the British to be kicking the Taliban's tail every battle, but that wouldn't make for a good campaign, would it?
Smashing good work! Keep it up!

Gameplay wins out I guess - although the scenarios would slightly favour the British as the campaign results of casualties were against them.
Morning - Day 3
A news team shows up with a small escort looking for an interview and some vital background shots. A nearby British section needs to get them the hell out of the area before they're killed or kidnapped.
No Taliban are present at the start (though the insurgency level is '11') and the Afghan civilians are scattered throughout the village

Evening - Day 3
The final Taliban assault on British positions takes place ñ can the British hold out until a major force from Qandahar can drive them off?

Wonderful work, Donogh. I really enjoyed reading the entire campaign. Your table and minis looked great all the way through. I am sure you felt the pressure getting this all set before Galecon, but it looks like you managed it with ease.
Keep gaming, mate! You are awesome!
